I pull up the menu and type in the correct cheats, but they do not work. Is there something else I need to do first in order to enable them (like in the Sims), or...???

Sadly they don't tell you if it's a code or not.My cheats will not work in Spore?
You don't need to do anything, just open the menu and cheat away. The game does NOT confirm the cheat codes however. You have to look and see if your chosen result happened. (In the space age, it will give you a badge for cheating though, and it will not be able to coplete any achievements from that save file.)
